Wassily Kandinsky ‘Park of St. Cloud’

We know Kandinsky as the author of mind-boggling abstractions that puzzle us with color abundance and random geometry. But few people are aware that, before creating his famous synesthetic ‘Compositions,’ he spent so much time painting whimsical yet quite down-to-earth landscapes that you would rather attribute to someone like Van Gogh or Matisse. This atmospheric view of St. Cloud Park near Paris isn’t as evident as it seems at first sight, though…

A landscape that suggests more than it tells

Unlike Kandinsky’s signature works, ‘Park of St. Cloud’ is performed in Post-Impressionist style. While the artist uses new means of expression, we can also see certain retreat to classic forms (for instance, in his choice of colors – mostly green and brown, typical for traditional landscape painting). This incredible duality is particularly noticeable in the tree crowns where loose brushwork is combined with realistic communication of volume. As a result, some parts of the scenery are a bewildering mess of strokes where it’s up to you to trace familiar outlines.

At the end of the alley, there is an abrupt transition to darkness. But if we look close, our eye will shape it into vague silhouettes, perhaps a group of strollers or even an orchestra marching through the park. Kandinsky builds his manner on the ability of human psychic to find images everywhere, just like we sometimes see things in a dim room when we are tired, scared or our perception is otherwise triggered to distort the visual signal. The same effect is applied to the secondary plane. What is it on the left: a fence, a row of bushes or something else you haven’t yet thought about? Is there a river behind it? What looms in the background? Every viewer will make a different guess. And that’s exactly why the painting is so unsophisticatedly absorbing and intriguingly inconclusive.
